Useless Propositions September 17, 2007
Posted by Martin in : General Rants, Propositions, Religion/Atheism, Weird Crap , trackbackHello. A few colleagues and I came up with a short bundle of useless propositions regarding life in general.
Yes, we’re that bored.
Proposition One: Holding hands and hugging are quite preferable to kissing and sex.
Weird proposition, yes? This holds true for some of us, insofar as holding hands and hugging have a markedly less potential for objectification of the partner. The value of these acts is not dependent on biological or involuntary factors, i.e. unlike overt sex, which is pleasurable in itself regardless of choice. These acts depend on one’s subjective perception of the partner; the value and pleasure derived from it is dependent on you, it is a colloquial choice, thereby increasing its value. To illustrate: the pleasure of sex comes from the highly-acclaimed orgasm, but there is no such necessary basis for the hug. The hug is enjoyed because of the perceived value of the hugger; thus, it is more sincere and valuable in this sense. I think this proposition only applies to males of a certain age group, though.
Proposition Two: Optimists are people who usually do not know all the facts.
I think that this should be fairly apparent. True, there are people who are optimistic about certain things because they have a basis, such as a soldier being optimistic about winning a battle where they outnumber the enemy ten to one. There are, however, people who are stubbornly optimistic, such as one of the soldiers on the opposite side of the abovementioned scenario. Yes, optimism has some psychological feel-good benefits, but pathological optimism is simply stupid. It’s almost akin to having faith that there’s a light at the end of a caved in underwater tunnel at 3 a.m. Not all scenarios end nicely, comrade.

Optimism on things you have reason to be optimistic of can be nice, but being optimistic about everything is willful ignorance.
Proposition Three: People give more respect to faith than what is deserved, if any actually is.
I mean, come on, people. Seriously. Dictionaries all over the world agree: faith is irrational. It is defined as a belief that does not rest on logical proof or empirical evidence. In short, it is willful ignorance, a deliberate suspension of disbelief and reason in favor of emotional needs. Why is it even considered to be a “virtue” in the Catholic tradition? I do not see people praising their elders on the basis of their faith.
“All hail Mr. Dick Stupe! He accepts things unquestioningly and without reasoning! He accepts whatever authorities feed him even against empirical evidence and logical proofs that indicate the falsity of his position!“
But then again, there could be a better phrasing of that.
“Oh, how great Mr. Stupe’s faith is! Against all adversity, he holds steadfast in his faith in God, unrelenting and immovable from the Word of the Almighty God. This unwavering trust in the Lord God against whatever false truths that Satan may tempt us with should serve as a model for all of the flock.“
That’s better. Why do people even demand respect for their religion or faith when one ever so subtly treads on blasphemy? Hell. I implore you to watch Pat Condell’s take on the intersection between faith and respect on YouTube; it can be viewed here.

So, there you have it. Three (3) propositions concerning life in general. Whatever.

Proposition four:
Wimmen are silly?
Er… comment. I agree with the last one most. But hey, for the sake of diplomacy and not getting oneself in trouble with authorities…
